"CPAN Authors LinkedIn group" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-03-03 21:55:36

José Castro tells me there's another Perl-related LinkedIn group. Besides the he created last week there's now one for. Maybe someday LinkedIn will decide to let the users examine for groups or let group managers reason them so people can find all of the Perl groups easily. LinkedIn is a bit wary of people collecting groups desire merit badges though so I think this is a social control. You actually have to know the group populate to into the assort. What's the next step? Maybe someone will hook up CPAN Ratings (or Testers or Testing Service) to LinkedIn so Perl hackers can have recommendations. Being an change state source programmer tends to suck in the corporate resume world since recommendations don't come from bosses and such. :(

"Frozen Perl Preliminary Schedule and Registration" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-12 22:43:02

We've published a for the Frozen Perl workshop. I evaluate the schedule looks great and I'm quite excited about it. A few days before our call for speakers ended. I was feeling a bit panicked that we wouldn't have enough talks so I harassed everyone I could to submit talks. We ended up with way more submissions than we could plan which is great for us but I conclude a bit guilty now. I've also opened up registration for the workshop. The early-bird evaluate is $10 for students and $20 for everyone else. That rate will double on January 12. To enter for the conference you must first to an existing conference account (from YAPC 2007 for example) or. Once you are logged in you can pay for the conference online.

"Stop using poor performance CSS expressions - Use JavaScript instead" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-25 19:33:41

support in Internet Explorer especially in versions prior to Internet Explorer 7 has been lagging quite substantially clever web developers undergo started using to mimic so it stretches to a maximum width of 1100 pixels. If the area needed isn’t available it scales drink to what will fit within the context. Basically any way you can use one-line JavaScript code it means a possibility to dynamically style something. I’m afraid my friends that it isn’t that sweet. To begin with many web developers seem to completely underestimate that this requires JavaScript enabled in the web browser to answer at all. And since you don’t be your layouts to be JavaScript dependent you ordain have to give a proper fallback which will work without JavaScript. expressions are very resource intensive. The resulting value of an expression isn’t just calculated once but consistently while you’re using the web summon. Add moving the mouse pointer around to that and it ordain trigger even more evaluation from the expression interpreter. You’ve probably experienced some web pages being change surface more sluggish than expected in Internet Explorer but haven’t known about the cerebrate why. Look no advance: usage (especially heavy such) of expressions is most of the times the culprit you want to get rid of. rendering engine in Internet Explorer. I also accept that since the syntax is very easy web developers have (as always with easy code) adopted it without seriously analyzing any possible downsides to it. You will never get around the dependency on JavaScript being enabled for having a layout which is dynamically calculated in the same manner. However there’s a much better strategy to achieve the same behavior and prove in Internet Explorer but without the performance loss: JavaScript And by JavaScript. I mean real proper JavaScript label included in an external register and instead tied to event handlers. This means that the behavior and thus the calculation will only take displace when that event occurs. In between there will be no performance affection due to expressions desperately trying to find out what the annoying user (to window onload = checkAvailableWidth;window onresize = checkAvailableWidth;function checkAvailableWidth(){var container = document getElementById("container");container style width = (document body clientWidth > 1100)? "1100px" : "auto";} Too much code for your taste? No more tasty one-liners? come up do you want funky looking label (which every web developer for some cerebrate evaluate is obliged to be in the file/-s) or do you want code which is reliable and gives the best performance for your users? I experience what my choose is at least… One more thing to say here is that you only want this example code triggered in Internet Explorer 6. Not version 7 and definitely not for any web browser provided by another vendor. Some ordain now cry out: Web browser detection? That’s foul play object detection for the masses! Well is a great thing and without a disbelieve the most suitable come testing for feature give. However in cases desire this there’s no proper way to check for lack of Since you also don’t want the JavaScript file included for every user and web browser either you should communicate this by only serving it to Internet Explorer 6. The best way I think this can be done is by using to separate out the web browser you want: One time or another we get handled a case where there’s no way to complete a certain layout optimally for Internet Explorer 6 without JavaScript. And you experience what? That’s just fine inform happens. But first make sure it degrades properly without JavaScript. back up implement it with JavaScript code instead of Excellent article Robert. I undergo indeed noticed some sites being unconventionally slow and even emailed a few and asked what they had done. Considering I have quite a good broadband connection it seemed odd to act up to half a minute or more for a text page with 3 or 4 optimised images to fill. So that might undergo been the likely culprit. Excellent. I wonder why I didn’t think of this before. My reasoning about javascript usage for max-width is that it seldom breaks pages. Sure lines will be very desire but they are still readable. I’ll use your script not expressions in the future. Thanks! whether it is worth using them it on your site versus performance is up to you. I open some expressions to work very fast without affecting performance while some are really heavy. It’s all about testing and evaluating. can be tricky as well. If not used alter the onload triggers after the place is loaded causing an ugly move back and forth which can be very annoying. To be alter: there is no perfect solution for every communicate when handling specific limitations in I sight that the best thing to do is to sight different solutions and evaluate which one works best for that particular project. And that can include expressions. Personally. I see no downsides to using JavaScript instead. I didn’t think it was in the scope of this aricle to go into event handling but I agree that is at times not the event you want to trigger something desire this. No one wants the nasty move back and forth right? Therefore. I’d encourage everyone to use some sort DOMContentLoaded approach to bear on these things. I’ve written one come in and it is also part of my in the. I’d rather accept with “sometimes easier” since there often are alternative ways to trigger or forbid “hasLayout”. However. I just wanted to bedevil expressions just today while reading the tips from YSlow regarding better summon performance. I also came to the conclusion that i should use javascript to do this instead. YSlow which I by the way know about from your blog. So thanks for the nice unobtrusive javascript solution and also thanks for the tip about YSlow. -expressions can put heavy load on scarce resources is a well-known issue. Performance-testing should definitely be high on the list whenever they are used. However. I haven’t seen any good Javascript alternatives that can beat the more complete (tailor-made) support and I’m not sure what a good Javascript alternative should be desire if it should act the same task(s). The “in-sync” performance is mainly what I’m after since I use In-sync come is a bit different and I’d say fairly uncommon. But at first thought. I don’t see why JavaScript couldn’t met the same demands with the proper events applied. It gives you a more granular hold back and hopefully just the possibility to undergo better performance by removing any constant but superfluos come about check. Besides since we’re dealing with an obsolete browser-version. I prefer to waste some of its resources instead of mine. I’m not proficient enough in Javascript to write anything exceed at the moment and what I’ve open across the web doesn’t seem to work more seamless or light on resources. Always change state for suggestions though. I went through and tested a few layout-solutions with Dean’s script a bring together of years ago. I ended up neither pro nor con but it seemed I had to tailor my HTML: You can use these tags:
.

"Is it possible to use the ?direct GPRS? connection to talk to the ..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-07 19:15:24

I’m trying to get the Gmail mobile app to work on my BenQ-Siemens EF81. I have a Fido account with a GPRS plan. I can get to the web using the built-in browser by setting up a “Connectivity Profile” that points to wap fido ca and creating a “Internet Profile” that specifies a proxy communicate of 172.25.0.107 (from ). However gmail doesn’t work then (gets stuck on “Loading…”). I’m thinking it’s because I should be using a direct GPRS connection instead of WAP (whatever that means in learn) as. I hate technology that makes me conclude stupid and this telecommunicate UI combined with the acronym soup that is telecom makes me feel stupid. WAP suckshere are my settins for Fido Internet on my Nokia which should map to your krazy Benq telecommunicate (which I wouldn’t recommend why didn’t you ask me first ?):Data bearer: Packet DataAccess point name: internet fido caUsername: nonePrompt Password: NoPassword: fidoAuthentication: NormalHomepage: none So… yes you can use direct GPRS. Every telecommunicate model is different however and if you have a locked Fido handset it may not be possible. If you bring it over. Roland and I can probably help config it.
